The First Official National Park Stamp Print.
The National Park Stamp features winning art from a nationwide competition much like the Federal Duck Stamp.
However, the National Park Stamp is unique in that it is comprised of not just one but six original works of art. The six pieces are winning entries from the 1987 Arts for the Parks competition. More than 2700 original paintings of our national parks were submitted by both professionals and amateurs. Of these, 100 paintings were selected as winners by a panel of renowned judges.
Of the 100 winners, a $100,000 grand prize was awarded to Richard Schmid for his entry, Mountain Stream, a locale in Rocky Mountain National Park. Three regional winners were also awarded a $3000 prixe each: Lee Stroncek's Cloud Drift, Logan Pass; Peter Nisbet's Morning Light, Canon del Muerto; and Steve Lesnick's Lincoln Memorial.
In addition, Michael Coleman's Passing Showere-Yellowstone was selected to be incorporated into the National Park Stamp and to be the official 1988 Collector Stamp Print. Robert Dance's Hattera Standing was added to the National Park Stamp to comprise the total of six images that best represent our national parks from "sea to shining sea."
