Mearns' Quail.
Mearns' quail were once common in Texas throughout the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos regions but the elegant little birds, one of four Texas quail species, suffered from the introduction of livestock.
Unlike other quail species, Mearns' quail feed almost entirely on roots and tubers they dig from the ground. Livestock eradicated their favorite food sources, and the birds are currently restricted to ten West and Central Texas counties.
