Mearns' Quail. Mearns' quail were once common in Texas throughout the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos regions but the elegant little birds, one of four Texas quail species, suffered from the introduction of livestock. Unlike other quail species, Mearns' quail feed almost entirely on roots and tubers they dig from the ground.
