Mallards. (Anas platyrhynchos).
The breeding male's green head and neck, separated from a dark brown chest by a narrow white ring, are highly diagnostic.
At rest, the folded wings form a dark line separating the gray sides and back. The black rump and tail coverts contrast with the white outer tail feathers.
The female is a rather uniform mottled brown, lighter and less mottled on the head and belly.
In flight, the dark blue speculum, bordered in front and back by white, alternates with the flash of white wing linings, helping to distinguish both sexes from other ducks.
