The green jay is a Texas original. These gaudy tropical birds are colored so brightly that a first-time viewer has trouble believing his own eyes. Also known as the Rio Grande jay, green jays are common in southern Texas, particularly along the coastal areas. Green jays are omnivorous and are welcomed visitors at backyard bird feeders on ranches and in the suburbs of South Texas towns.
John Dearman is likewise a Texas original. His only formal art training was a brief workshop but Dearman's natural talent and drive make up for his lack of training. This is his tenth Texas conservation stamp art. When Dearman is not hard at work, he can usually be found fishing or bird hunting along the Texas coast or studying the heavens above his west central Texas home.
