2002 Texas Nongame - Sherrie Russell Meline - Stamp Print

The American avocet is an elegant and graceful member of the shorebird family. Avocets are permanent residents along the Texas coast, and additional birds nest during summer months in the Texas Panhandle.

The avocet sweeps back and forth with its distinctive, upturned bill to bring food to the surface of shallow water. The bird feeds mostly on insects, shrimp and other crustaceeans.

Artist Sherri Russell Meline has chosen to portray this avocet pair in cinnamon breeding plumage. Winter plumage is gray on the bird's head and slender neck.

Educated in Japan and Wisconsin, Meline is a Wisconsin native, currently living in California, who has been a professional artist since the mid-1970's. Meline often photographs and observes her favorite subjects in order to perfect her style. She painted the 2000 Texas Waterfowl Stamp art and the 1990 Nongame Stamp art.
