An impressive Rio Grande turkey gobbles to thunder from a lightning strike. Gobbling turkeys and unsettled weather define the spring season in much of Texas. This is the turkey breeding season. Mature gobblers, high on testosterone, "shock gobble" in response to any loud sound. That includes thunder, crow calls, coyote howls or the slamming of a truck door.
Biologists say shock gobbling results from turkeys that are intensely anxious to make the first response to nearby hen calls or the challenge of competitive gobblers. Texas has more Rio Grande gobblers than any other state.
This is Reggie McLeroy's first contribution to Texas conservaiton stamp art. The Louisiana native has painted his home state's Wildlife Stamp, the Louisiana Duck Stamp and has earned Honorable Mention in the National Wild Turkey Federation's 2001-2003 Grand National Art Print Competition. McLeroy also has a cartoon strip that appears in the Shreveport Times and the Monroe Newstar.
The edition will be limited to the number of wholesale orders received by June 30, 2003, but in no event will the edition be less than 1,050. A special Conservation Edition of 400 prints will be made available to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. There will be 100 Artist's Proofs.
