David Hagerbaumer - Limited Edition Etchings

"Autumn Ruff"

Briefly, the process of creating an original etching is:

1. With a special tool, the artist draws his design on a specially prepared zinc or copper plate. He must always "think in reverse," in that the final etching will be a mirror image of his design on the plate.

2. The finished plate is then immersed in an acid bath which "etches" the lines in the surface of the plate. This process may be repeated several times and the plate reworked to get the desired effect.

3. Ink is forced into the etched lines of the plate with a rounded dabber, then carefully wiped off, leaving only the bitten lines full. Various wiping techniques may be used to achieve the final background appearance.

4. The inked plate is then run though a press with a special paper that been thoroughly soaked in water. This allows the limp paper to emboss down into the crevises and pick up the ink from the etched lines of the plate.

5. Finally, the print is carefully separated from the plate. One original etching has been created. To get a second image, the entire process must be repeated.

After drying for several days, each etching is given final approval by the artist with his signature. This completes the process of creating a traditional work of art - each an original - which has its own unique characteristics.
